wild dometic and import shrimp
|
Shrimp carried by Sammy's Seafood includes primarily the local domestic whites and local Key West pinks along with import white and black tigers. The domestic white shrimp (block) carried by Sammy's is typically from Louisianna and Mississippi and the pinks are local from Key West (mostly IQFs). Domestic shrimp season is the summertime up to December for the brown shrimp. Pinks are available year round. Summer can bring fresh, head on white/hopper mixes to us straight out of the Bay and we sell those by the pound or burlap sack full. Brown shrimp can be a cheaper alternative late in the season but Sammy's continues to try to make the better quality choices and stay with a white or pink. Import shrimp is used in most of the peeled and deveined varieties carried by Sammy's as well as for many of the smaller sized shrimp. (Import shrimp tends to maintain a better grading and sizing in the smaller shrimp). The import brand used by Sammy's is a high end, high quality, least chemically saturated of all the import shrimp products available on the market.

WHITE SHRIMP - The white shrimp is a key commercial species that inhabits the Gulf of Mexico and the southern Atlantic, along with pink and brown shrimp, which it closely resembles. White shrimp are abundant in the Gulf of Mexico. This shrimp has a firm, mild, sweet-tasting flesh in the tail and body. Sammy's carries a wild domestic variety of frozen shrimp in many of the larger shrimp sizes. Smaller counts are usually white wild and farmed imports due to their superior sizing and packing in these smaller sizes. Fresh browns are available in season (summer) by the bag. In general, cold-water shrimp are smaller and more succulent (they grow more slowly).

TIGER SHRIMP - When it comes to shellfish, black tiger shrimp happens to be one of the most popular forms available today. Sammy's carries black tiger farmed imports out of Equador and Honduras. We seek to carry the most clean, organic shrimp available for all our black tiger and foreign import shrimp. Characterized by dark stripes encircling the shell, the black tiger shrimp grows to be one of the largest shrimps available commercially. The rich, white meat holds the stripes, even when peeled. Due to the bold color, tiger shrimp make a great presentation, especially when served with the tail intact.

PINK SHRIMP - Pink shrimp at Sammy's are primarily the locally caught domestics. The local wild caught pinks are packed locally and carried in a variety of sizes. They are the suprior shrimp in sizing, taste and preference though often the most expensive.
